July LCN Meeting Writeup

MINUTES FOR LAKE CLAIRE NEIGHBORS July 17, 2025

The meeting began at 7:20 in the Rose Room of the Frazer Center.  There was a delay because of technical issues.

Number of attendees:  14 (including guests)

Officers in attendance:  Carol Holliday, VP for Planning and NPU Representative, Beth Grashof, VP for Zoning, Deane Uroic, VP for Safety, and Joe Agee, President

City representatives:  Lt. Keith Jones, 6th Precinct and Beverly Benfield, Representative for Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari

The meeting began with Lt. Jones giving an update on the crime rate in Atlanta that is declining along with that in Lake Claire that continues to be very low.  There was a report of a car driving dangerously doing 360s (doughnuts) at the intersection of Lakeshore and Claire Drive.  He said he would check into the matter. The neighbors who reported the incident noted that they were not able to get a license plate number, but that it was a black, late model Dodge Charger (or Challenger).

Beverly Benfield gave a report on Councilmember Bakhtiari’s work concerning zoning and tree ordinances to reduce the loss of trees in Atlanta, promote affordable housing, upgrading neighborhood infrastructure, and support services for the homeless.

Officer Reports:

Jay Severa: Not much activity this month.    The current balance of available funds is at $5,345.

Deane Uroic: See report by Lt. Jones above

Announcements and Current Issues:

Hutson Chilton, Community Forestry Coordinator for Trees Atlanta spoke about its mission to counter the loss of Atlanta’s Tree Canopy by planting a variety of native trees such as White oak, Over cup oak, Willow oak, River Birch, and Sycamore.  In this regard, a planting event is scheduled for several streets in Lake Claire on Nov. 1.  If anyone is interested in volunteering, please contact Hutson at  hutson@treesatlanta.org.

Christina Hodgen, CPNO Infrastructure Chair, presented a proposal for a stop sign at the intersection of Harriet Ave. and Clifton Rd. There are complaints that many vehicles do not slow down when going through the intersection that is dangerous for children crossing the, especially those going to and returning from Mary Lin Elementary.   One neighbor expressed opposition because of the fumes generated by the cars while idling at the stop sign.  A vote recommending the proposal will be held at the next regular LCN meeting on Thurs., Aug. 21.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45pm.
