CM Bakhtiari’s office report
- Atlanta adopted its FY-26 budget, raising the minimum wage, boosting public safety, investing in affordable housing, tackling food insecurity, and expanding youth programs. Details here.
- City Council passed CM Bakhtiari’s Cool Roof Ordinance. It requires reflective, lighter-colored roofing materials on new buildings, lowering indoor temperatures, cutting energy costs, and making our city more livable.
- Additionally, City Council adopted an update to the city’s Tree Protection Ordinance. This legislation isn’t perfect. It doesn’t go far enough to protect our tree canopy, but after three years of inaction and loopholes that let special interests exploit a broken system, we needed to act, and this is a real step forward. Illegal tree cutting is happening daily across District 5 and throughout the city. This TPO strengthens enforcement, adds new staff, increases penalties, and raises the cost of tree removal from $30 to $140 per inch, with inflation adjustments built in. Additionally, it:
- Doubles Funding for the low-income senior energy assistance program
- Provides Incentives for affordable housing by scaling tree recompense based on income levels and number of affordable units
- Sets New Tree Density Requirements by zoning
- Adds 10+ Arborist and Support positions across city departments
- Creates a Registry for tree professionals
- Establishes Clearer Rules for public projects and strengthens penalties for illegal removal
This is a step forward and we’re not stopping here.
