Old-Fashioned Family Picnic in the ‘Hood, May 4, 3-5 p.m.

According to a misty legend handed down from ancient times, it was once traditional in small towns and neighborhoods for families to get together for no other reason than to have fun.  Lake Claire Neighbors and the Lake Claire Community Land Trust are reviving this lost tradition, and you’re invited!  So put on your khakis or tie-dyes, round up the kids, and come on over to the Land Trust on Sunday afternoon, May 4, for an old-fashioned family picnic.

For only`$2.00 a plate, you’ll be served a meat or veggie hot dog with all the fixins, coleslaw, chips, cookies, and lemonade.  We always encourage folks to bring your own washable plate, cup, and utensils.

Scheduled activities include guided tours of the Land Trust on the half hour and a talent show of sorts with an open microphone on the stage in the amphitheater.  Kids of all ages can sign up near the stage to sing a song, dance a jig, tell a story, play a musical instrument, tell jokes, or any other entertaining thing you can think of.  Hardendorf’s Myles Nielsen will serve as MC, and his sisters, Stella and Esther, will perform Irish dances.  John Kelly and friends will get our show started at 3 p.m. with a few favorite songs.

We’ve also asked our firemen from Fire Station 12 to park their truck in the Arizona Avenue cul-de-sac for kids to explore (provided they don’t get called to a fire!). And of course, Big Lou the Emu will be welcoming visitors down by the pond. (As always, please don’t let your dog bark at him.)  Little kids also love just playing at the playground.  Lake Claire Neighbors, the Land Trust, and Clifton Sanctuary will each set up an information table so that neighbors can learn more about their neighborhood.

Parking at Clifton Sanctuary(corner of Connecticut and McLendon) is recommended if you don’t plan to arrive on foot.  Please do not park on adjoining streets around the Land Trust.
