Here are some local events Neighbors might be interested in attending, or volunteering to help out with, including : CORELunchtime in the Studio Event, TOUR deCATUR Road Race, DeKalb Rape Crisis Center’s Take Back the Night 5K Road Race/Walk Volunteer Opportunities, the Touch-A-Truck event (see below), and

Decatur Public Works Department’s Spring Electronics Recycling Day and Paper Shredding and Styrofoam Recycling Day.

CORE Lunchtime in the Studio Event Volunteer Opportunity

  • Thursday, March 15, 10:30am to 1:30pm
  • CORE (formerly Several Dancers Core) Studio
  • Decatur Square, 133 Sycamore St.
  • Decatur-based CORE is looking for volunteers to help with set up and break down of our Lunchtime in the Studio event from 10:30am-1:30pm on Thursday, March 15th. It is a free event with lunch from Farm Burger and coffee from Starbucks. The topic is our current Arts in Education programming that CORE has created to address body image and disordered eating.
  • CORE (formerly Several Dancers Core) is a professional dance organization that creates, performs, and presents contemporary dance, and is dedicated to opening channels of communication and education between artists and the community.
  • Sharing dance and lunch with the Decatur community, Lunchtime in the Studio showcases the many aspects of CORE in an informal setting.  The audience gets a free lunch provided by local restaurant sponsors while enjoying a free dance event! Visit http://www.coredance.org/ for more information about CORE. TOUR deCATUR Road Race and other Decatur Education Foundation Volunteer Opportunities

  • Saturday, March 24 for TOUR deCATUR
  • Registration is now open for the 10th Annual TOUR deCATUR, set for Saturday, March 24, at Decatur High School and benefitting the Decatur Education Foundation. Sign up to run the 5k, 1-mile Fun Run or Tot Trot and support children and youth across the community. For information about the race or to register, go to www.tourdecatur.com.
  • With over 2,000 participants expected, we need many hands to make this a great event.  Volunteers are needed on the 23rd for race number pick-up and on March 24th ( race day ) for registration, course monitoring, medal distribution, finish line and more! Decatur Education Foundation has a wide variety of other volunteer opportunities available, including St. Patrick’s Day event, office support, TOUR deCATUR event, baking, photography, and reporters/writers. Go to http://decatureducationfoundation.org/get-involved/volunteer for information on volunteer positions and to sign up. New Location for Spring Electronics Recycling Day 2012!
Saturday, March 17th, 9 am -1 pm

  • NEW LOCATION!: Decatur Public Works, 2635 Talley St.
  • *Enter on Talley Street from Columbia Drive – see website map
  • **Please note, styrofoam will no longer be collected at Decatur’s Electronics Recycling Day.  This material will be accepted at the new Paper Shredding and Styrofoam Recycling Event on March 31st from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. (see below)
  • Don’t throw away that old cell phone, camera or PC component! Save it and recycle it at Decatur’s free Electronics Recycling event. This event has been hugely successful at diverting electronic equipment from landfills, where they may contaminate soil and water
  • The next event takes place Saturday, March 17th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Decatur Public Works located at 2635 Talley Street.  Electronics dropped off that day will be sorted and disassembled into raw materials or cleaned for re use.
  • Recyclables must be dropped off during the hours of the event. Early drop-offs are not possible. Almost anything with an electrical cord can be recycled except microwave ovens.  A list of acceptable items and map are available at http://www.decaturga.com/index.aspx?page=138.
  • TV’s will be recycled for a minimal fee of $10 cash only per TV set with exact change. There is no charge to recycle other items.  Any metro area resident can participate.

Paper Shredding and Styrofoam Recycling Day

  • COST: Free
  • WHEN: Saturday, March 31 • 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • WHERE: Decatur Public Works, 2635 Talley St.
  • *Enter on Talley Street from Columbia Drive – see website map
  • The City of Decatur is hosting its first Paper Shredding and Styrofoam Collection Event on Saturday, March 31st from 9am-1pm. There is not cost for participation. This is a great opportunity to get rid of that bulky styrofoam you’ve been saving and ensure that your important personal documents are disposed of properly. AAA Security Shredding, Inc., provides secure on-site document shredding, and all shredded documents will be 100 percent recycled. Most document types are acceptable.

Touch-A-Truck – NEW DATE

  • Saturday, April 21, 10am to 1pm
  • Callaway Building Parking Lot
  • 120 W. Trinity Pl.
  • (next to the Saturday morning Decatur Farmer’s Market)

Join Decatur Active Living on Saturday, April 21st from 10am until 1pm for the annual Touch-a-Truck Event. This fun community event gives children of all ages an opportunity to touch, explore and see their favorite trucks or equipment on wheels.  The City of Decatur and DeKalb County dump trucks, fire trucks, tractors, police cars and motorcycles and many other types of vehicles will be on display

New this year: Ride your bicycle to the event. Decatur Police will be on hand to register your bicycle. In the event that it is lost or stolen, registration will aid in its safe return.

Take Back the Night 5K Road Race/Walk Volunteer Opportunities

  • Saturday, April 28, 4pm to 7pm
  • Agnes Scott College

The DeKalb Rape Crisis Center is hosting its 21st Take Back the Night 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, April 28. Volunteer opportunities include helping direct runners on the race course, handing out goody bags and water, distributing refreshments and coordinating timing.

 

The race begins and ends at historic Agnes Scott College in Decatur and winds through the beautiful Oakhurst and East Lake communities. Volunteers should plan to arrive by 4 p.m. and stay until 7 p.m. The one mile fun run/walk begins at 5 p.m. and the 5K begins at 5:30 p.m. Volunteers are invited to stay after the race for an awesome pizza party, live music from Decatur band “Joyscout,” moonwalk and awards. All volunteers receive a race t-shirt and student volunteers receive credit for three volunteer hours. The race will be held rain or shine.

DRCC provides counseling to hundreds of survivors of sexual assault annually, support to their loved ones and prevention education.  Working together, we can raise awareness, change attitudes and help prevent sexual assault.
