ATLANTA – City of Atlanta officials will conduct a comprehensive housing inventory study
and analysis to provide critical information on the economic challenges and opportunities
regarding housing stock in neighborhoods throughout the city.
The study, directed by the Department of Planning and Community Development under the leadership of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, is scheduled to be completed by fall 2012. The analysis, a new city initiative, will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, city officials will assess the city’s current residential housing stock. The second phase concludes with strategic recommendations for city leaders and key stakeholders to seek and attract investment opportunities in various neighborhoods.
DPCD’s Office of Housing is leading the project with the support of the Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. and the Fulton County/City of Atlanta Land Bank Authority. The primary purpose of the housing study is to review the current dynamics impacting neighborhoods. Other objectives of the study include:
- Identifying unmet housing needs.
- Determine future housing trends and ways to implement them in areas of greatest need.
- Create housing recommendations that will allow for strategic investment based on empirical data.
“The information we gather in this housing analysis will help us identify and implement strategic community development projects,” said Commissioner James E. Shelby. “With this comprehensive review of each neighborhood we will be better able to work with all stakeholders and identify plans that have the highest and most valuable impact.”
APD Solutions, LLC (APDS) is under contract with the City of Atlanta and is responsible for
collecting, presenting and making recommendations to the City based on the demographic data. Among other things, APDS will gather and catalog housing types, foreclosure data and
inventories of commercial developments, and other key information for the purpose of creating a data set that identifies specific and unique neighborhood characteristics.
